# What is VerifiedHuman?

VerifiedHuman is a global standard and community for human creativity. Creators agree to a published standard for their field and use the VerifiedHuman mark on work that meets it. The mark certifies an accountable human commitment: a person stands behind the essential creative contribution in that work.

Human trust is the currency of this model. The creator's attestation is the central act. Evidence about process, technical provenance, sample review, and investigation of concerns support that accountability. They do not replace the person who makes the commitment.

## The problem VerifiedHuman addresses

A finished image, article, song, or recording does not always reveal how it was made. Audiences who value human creativity need a recognizable way to find it. Creators need a way to explain their contribution without treating every audience interaction as a technical dispute about a file.

VerifiedHuman connects those people through a common standard and mark. It makes the creator's commitment visible across publications, portfolios, platforms, and creative fields. The audience can read the standard, learn what the creator is representing, and ask meaningful questions about the process.

The standard does not require the audience to believe that human work is always better. It gives people information about something they may value: the human presence, judgment, skill, experience, and responsibility behind a work.

## What VerifiedHuman is—and what it is not

VerifiedHuman is a trust-based certification standard, a community of participating creators and organizations, and a shared language for human and AI contributions. It applies across writing, visual art, music, vocal performance, and content production. Educators can use the framework in teaching, and advocates can support the mission.

VerifiedHuman is not an AI detector, plagiarism scanner, bot-detection service, CAPTCHA challenge, or government-ID verification system. Here, “human” concerns the authorship, creation, composition, performance, or production of creative work. It does not mean proving that a website visitor is a person rather than a bot.

The mark is not a probability score produced by inspecting a file. Nor is it an invisible watermark, automatic Content Credential, or guarantee that every labeled work has been independently examined. [Certification and AI detection](https://verifiedhuman.info/verifiedhuman-vs-ai-detection) answer different questions.

## A standard, a commitment, and a mark

The published standard defines the essential human contribution in a field. A writer essentially authors the writing; a visual artist essentially creates the visual work; a musician essentially composes the music; a voice actor gives the human vocal performance; a content creator essentially produces the content.

The creator agrees to that standard, then applies the mark to qualifying work. An organization agrees to stand behind the qualifying work it publishes and labels. These commitments have specific meanings; they are more than a general preference for human creativity.

Membership belongs to the person or organization. Use of the mark is assessed against the particular work. Joining does not certify every past or future project, require a separate submission for every work, or turn the Collective into a registry of every labeled item. [The certification guide](https://verifiedhuman.info/verifiedhuman-certification-standard) explains the process.

## Human-led work can include AI assistance

VerifiedHuman uses the [Human–AI Spectrum](https://verifiedhuman.info/human-ai-spectrum) to describe five creative relationships. A higher number means more human authorship and creative control. VH3, VH4, and VH5 qualify for the mark when the relevant field's requirements are met. VH1 and VH2 do not.

VH3 is human-led, AI-assisted work. It allows AI-generated material when the human makes the essential creative contribution and substantially transforms that material as required by the field. Small edits, prompt refinement, or selection alone do not establish that contribution.

The field matters. Disclosed AI translation of a human-written original is permitted under the Writers definitions. A synthetic or cloned voice does not become a human vocal performance through editing. Read the relevant definitions rather than treating a general Spectrum label as a shortcut around the standard.

## Verification and accountability

The creator's attestation under the published standard is the central certification act. Human trust comes first. The creator applies the mark to qualifying work and stands accountable to the audience for that use.

Additional accountability includes third-party review of randomly selected work samples and investigation when an audience member raises a concern. A selected sample or a concern can lead to direct, respectful questions about process, tools, and methods: What did you make? What did AI contribute? How did you transform the material? Relevant evidence can support the account.

This is not independent examination of every file or routine monitoring of every creative step. Additional institutional verification is available to discuss when needed; describe it according to what was actually arranged and reviewed. A concern about use of the mark can be brought to [VerifiedHuman](https://verifiedhuman.info/contact) with information identifying the work and the question.

## Who takes part

The community includes writers, visual artists, musicians, voice actors, content creators, and organizations. A school, studio, publisher, agency, label, or collective can make the organizational commitment for the work it represents and labels.

[Education](https://verifiedhuman.info/edu) offers a framework that is free to reference and teach without signing up. Teachers who create writing, images, music, narration, or mixed-media resources can join under the applicable creative standard. [Advocates](https://verifiedhuman.info/advocates) make a statement of support; that statement does not certify a creative work.

VerifiedHuman was founded by Micah Voraritskul in April 2023. The [Collective](https://verifiedhuman.info/collective), [our story](https://verifiedhuman.info/our-story), and [About page](https://verifiedhuman.info/about) introduce the people and purpose behind the standard. Current membership figures should be taken from dated records rather than assumed from an older article.

## Where technical provenance fits

VerifiedHuman is a Contributor Member of the [Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA)](https://c2pa.org/membership/). C2PA develops technical standards for recording information about the source and history of digital content.

That is complementary to a human-creativity standard. A provenance record and a creator's accountable commitment provide different information. Contributor membership does not mean that C2PA has certified VerifiedHuman's members, endorsed each labeled work, or independently audited every creative claim.

## Joining and supporting the work

Joining is free. Contributions are welcome and help support the website, resources, and work of welcoming and featuring creators. The same standard and resources apply whether a person contributes or joins without a contribution.

Creative and organizational memberships last one year and renew annually; advocate membership lasts for life without renewal. The [current FAQ](https://verifiedhuman.info/faq) explains membership duration and suggested contributions.
